Some people need to undergo bone grafting, a regenerative surgery that involves a periodontist, an oral surgeon, an orthopedic surgeon, and an anesthesiologist. This procedure addresses issues related to the gradual deterioration of the supporting bone around an area where a tooth is missing. As this supporting bone deteriorates, people may experience difficulty chewing, issues with speech, soft-tissue pain, and more. Bone grafts can help address bone loss issues and provide a needed foundation for an implant.

The cost of bone grafts

Some people may be unable to afford bone grafts as the treatment can be costly. The cost depends on the graft source and the amount of bone needed.  For instance, people may have to pay around $200 to $1,200 for a graft from an outside source such as a donor or synthetic material.  People may have to pay around $2,000 to $3,000 for a graft sourced from their own body as two surgical procedures are necessary.  People may have to pay around $3,000 for a graft when an implant is needed.

Insurance coverage for bone grafts

Bone grafts may be covered by dental or medical insurance.  Although people usually do not receive dental coverage for implants, they may receive partial coverage for a graft if it’s medically necessary. When people do not have dental coverage for grafts, they can utilize their health insurance to help pay for one needed due to an accident, injury, or medical condition. Coverage may also apply if their ability to eat is severely compromised and can’t be fixed by other options.

People need bone grafts for a variety of reasons, including addressing bone loss in their jaw and supporting their implants. Although these grafts cost a lot for some people, they can utilize their dental or medical coverage to help pay for them.
