Code Tip: New Codes in 2018

New codes as of January 1, 2018 include something very interesting:

• D9995 Teledentistry–synchronous real-time encounter–This is reported in addition to other procedures such as diagnostic to the patient on the date of service
• D9996 Teledentistry–asynchronous; information stored and forwarded to dentist for subsequent review–also reported with diagnostic services delivered on the date of service
• D9995 is for live video of the service and D9996 is for a “store and forward” consultation.  

These codes were introduced to treat patients in remote areas where there was lack of available care for diagnosing and monitoring a condition.  They also serve great purpose for the elderly that are confined to nursing homes and are unable to leave the facility.
